Project Engineer - Woking

upto £50k per annum plus Benefits - Perm - Renewable Energy

Our client owns and operates low carbon and renewable energy networks in Milton Keynes and Woking, supplying district heat, cooling and electricity to large commercial and public sector customers, and approximately 1500 residential units. The business is generating assets that include nearly 10 MW of gas fired CHP and over 1.8 MW of solar PV installations.

The Project Engineer’s role is to assist in the efficient operation of our clients’ low carbon energy infrastructure and to provide technical expertise in supporting the development and growth of the company’s energy networks.

Primarily based in Woking, Surrey, with regular attendance also required in Milton Keynes and occasional travel elsewhere within the South East.

Individually responsible for: providing engineering design and technical expertise in relation to the operation and development of the energy networks.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Technical evaluation of potential new customers’ connections to the company’s energy networks, including assessment of energy demands to ensure successful integration with customers’ building services plant
  • Providing outline design and feasibility appraisal of new primary energy plant
  • Preparation of design briefs and specifications for installation of new district heat, cooling and electricity infrastructure
  • Personally, responsible for design of small projects and system improvements
  • Project management of new connections and upgrades to existing infrastructure including co-ordination of specialist design consultants and management of contractors
  • Providing client advice on the performance and delivery of mechanical and electrical planned maintenance work carried out for the company by its contractors and assisting in budget control of O&M activities
  • Evaluating the performance of the energy plant, distribution infrastructure and supply interfaces and identifying opportunities to improve operating efficiency and increase asset life
  • Preparation of tender documents and technical development of bids for our client to provide consultancy and other commercial services relating to district energy

Essential Qualifications and Training:

  • Degree level qualification in a relevant engineering discipline with a mechanical engineering bias. Recognised professional qualification

Desirable Qualifications and Training:

  • MEng/MSC Mechanical engineering or Energy and Building Design
  • Chartered Engineer, MCIBSE, MIMechE, or equivalent
  • Code of Practice for District Heat (Heat Networks Consultant)
  • LEED, BREEAM CIBSE
  • Low Carbon Energy Consultant

Expertise and Knowledge

Essential: 

  • A good understanding of the use of district heat in buildings, including the design and performance criteria for efficient operation of district heat systems
  • Some understanding of HVAC systems and building services
  • Knowledge of the use of CHP for the supply of heat and power in district energy systems
  • Familiarity with the CIBSE Code of Practice for District Heat  

Desirable:

  • Ability to user and interpret dynamic modelling software (IES, Hevacomp or similar)
  • Ability to use CHP district energy modelling systems (EnergyPro or similar)
  • Expertise in assessing comparative carbon impacts of energy supply systems
  • Some knowledge of electricity generation and distribution

Essential Experience

  • Proven and relevant experience as a project or design engineer for heat supply and distribution

Desirable Experience:

  • Involvement in the delivery, operation and construction of district heating schemes in the UK or overseas
