Senior CAD Designer - Shrewsbury

This is a permanent role with a competitive salary (negotiable depending on skills and experience) for a senior CAD Designer with management responsibilities. The position has been created as the result of sustained growth of the company and a desire of the owners to bring the design function ‘in house’. This is an exciting time to join a growing company where you can be part of influencing the direction of the firm through innovation and implementation of good design practise, systems and procedures. As senior CAD Designer you will be responsible for the complete design department of this small but busy and growing Shropshire steel fabrication business taking projects from the very first sketch plans and layouts through to workshop ready fabrication drawings giving you the opportunity to see your design from initial concept through to manufacture.

The Cad Designer role will involve

  • Both a full understanding of architectural building surveys and plans and small-scale steel structure design and fabrication
  • Communication/coordination between the company’s clients (architects and end users) as well as structural engineers, external designers, workshops, suppliers, and installation staff.
  • Initial concept, development and management of design for a range of products
  • Providing technical support to internal and external customers
  • Working with purchasing department to agree on realistic time frames and evaluating cost and risk
  • Working alongside purchasing department to order correct materials
  • Checking of external designers drawings
  • Signing off drawings for third party manufacturing
  • Occasional Travelling and site surveys, factory and supplier visits.

Senior CAD Designer Skills, Experience and Characteristics

  • Experience in the construction and building industry essential
  • Steel fabrication/manufacturing experience with full understanding of steel section sizes, dimensions and fabrication systems and methods.
  • Working knowledge of architectural drawings and drawing packages (such as Revit) and/or working within architectural practice or alongside architects beneficial.
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Proficient working with 3D SolidWorks/Inventor or another relevant 3D package (the company are willing to invest in preferred software) to produce fast but accurate concept, approval and fabrication drawings with BOMs
  • Working knowledge of 3D visualization/render applications an advantage
  • Design/Drawing office experience with coordination of multiple concurrent projects essential.
  • Experience of working in a small/medium sized business
  • A person who is capable of working with/leading others to successfully create a pleasant working team
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills in communication face to face, over the telephone and via email
  • Able to work under pressure in a small business environment where willingness to jump in and help is necessary
  • Steel workshop and/or on site contract management experience will be considered an advantage.
  • A willingness and ability to learn the company’s existing products and existing procedures fast.
